The Complete Electromagnetic Spectrum
UVB
UVB wavelengths along with proper temperature (usually additional heat), are responsible for vitamin D3 production in reptiles. However, only some UVB wavelengths (from 290-315 nm) help synthesize Vitamin D3. The Reptisun® UVB/LED bulb emits UVB wavelengths from 295 nm to 320 nm.
UVA
UVA is part of reptile vision, so without it they’re colorblind! A portion of UVA wavelengths (from 320nm-335nm) also help regulate Vitamin D3 production and let reptile’s body’s know when they’ve created enough. The Reptisun® UVB/LED bulb emits UVA wavelengths from 320nm-335nm and from 355nm-395nm.
VISIBLE LIGHT
Visible light is critical to reptiles as it is for humans. The amount of visible light a bulb emits is measured on a temperature scale corresponding to the warmth of the light relative to color. A bulb emitting light between 5,000 and 7,000 Kelvin most closely resembles the sun. The Reptisun® UVB/LED has a color temperature of 6,500 Kelvin.
INFRARED
The infrared spectrum provides heat for reptiles. This is critical for Vitamin D3 production and for maintaining body temperature (since reptiles are ectothermic). With the combination of the Reptisun® UVB/LED with a Basking Spot Lamp, you will achieve a more natural visible light with infrared for efficient deep heating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this produce any heat?
No, a heat lamp will need to be used to provide the correct temperature for your pet. We suggest using the Basking Spot Lamp or ReptiTuff Halogen Bulb to provide daytime heat and supplemental UVA/visible light.
How far away should the light be used from my animal?
When a screen cover is between the lamp and your pet, it will provide UVB from 8-36” distance. When no screen cover is used, UVB will be provided from 9-40” away from the lamp. (please see figure A for proper distances for a wide variety of species)
Is it dimmable?
No, this lamp should not be used with a dimmer.
How long is it guaranteed to work? How long before it stops emitting UVB?
The ReptiSun UVB/LED is covered by a 1 year manufacturer’s guarantee. When used 12 hours per day, the UVB chips can last up to 4 years until they decay to 50% output.
Can it be used for desert animals? Tropical?
At the appropriate distance, this lamp can be used with either desert or tropical animals; check the Ferguson Zone chart to determine how far to position the lamp from their basking zone.
Can it be used with a timer?
Yes, we recommend using this with a timer to provide your pet with a regular photoperiod.
What wavelengths does this produce?
This lamp produces beneficial UVB, UVA, and visible light. (see figure B, close-up image of threshold wavelengths, in nanometers)
Do they produce UVC?
No, this lamp does not produce UVC.
